Thermopolis Wyoming Fly Fishing Heritage
My great grandfather Art Schliske was also a rod builder for anglers in Thermopolis back in the 1930s as evidenced by this message I received from an elderly Wyoming gentleman.
“My father lived in Thermopolis in the early 1930’s. He had a flyrod (combo) built for him, he told me by a very skilled rod builder.
In my searching I believe it may have been built by a relative of yours. Art Schliske ??
My Dad, Chuck Rogers, gave it to me before his death in 1992. I’m interested in selling it now, as I just turned 90. Can you give me any information on the history of this Rod??
My Dad (Chuck Rogers) purchase this Combo Fly Rod in the mid 1930’s At that time he lived in Thermopolis. He and my Mom married in 1931. I was born in Thermopolis in March 1933.
Never used much, I never used them…Dad passed away in 1992, and I inherited them. I find no markings. Only damage is some age tear in the blue sleeves. Tips are in good shape.
My Mom and Dad probably met at the Mission Café where Mom worked as a waitress for her Aunt Grace and Uncle Art. They were married in 1931. I came along in 1933, side note….the Hospital I was born in burned to the ground some time later…don’t blame me, I did not have any matches. I am guessing that this old timer (Art Schliske) was also a patron of the restaurant.”
